The blue topaz stone is the best known of the numerous variations of topaz.
This stone can in fact take on colors ranging from orange, to pink, to purple; as explained in this comprehensive article on the topaz stone.
Topaz is particularly popular for making engagement rings.Cgo. To break away from the classic and expensive diamond, so difficult to choose, the topaz stone allows you to offer, at a very reasonable price, a large stone with a pleasant to the eye, original color that matches both yellow and white gold.
We will describe in detail the production of different models of gold rings with blue topaz, handcrafted in our jewelry workshop.
Choosing the right topaz for your ring
Maybe you didn’t know, but blue topaz can be found in different shades of blue.
From left to right, a sky blue, Swiss blue and London blue topaz
As you see in the image above, the blue topaz stone takes on different shades:
- Blue topaz is sky blue
- Swiss Blue Topaz is Caribbean blue
- London Blue topaz is a deep blue
Regardless of the shape of the stone you choose, you can also play with the shade of blue of your topaz.

This view shows oval, princess, round and oval topaz stones ranging in shade of blue from lightest to darkest.

This gold ring design is a direct inspiration from one of our ring designs.
The drawing
This ring is originally set with a 4mm Princess cut diamond, but for our client we modified the design to fit a 6.5mm stone.

This modification allows it to have a larger colored stone for a much lower budget than the same diamond ring design.

Gold production
Once the ring design is adapted to our stone, a wax model is printed via 3D printing to test the ring size and stone fitting.

Our topaz stone is placed on the wax pattern of the ring prior to production
This is followed by the lost wax casting phase which allows us to obtain our 18k yellow gold ring from our wax model.
This ancient jewelry technique consists of making a refractory plaster mold using our wax model, then destroying the model by heating the mold.
The molten gold is then poured into the mold and takes the shape of the impression left free in the mold.
This video summarizes the steps of this process:
Thus we obtain our ring design in 18 karat gold, raw cast iron.

The work on the metal then begins.
The body of the ring is then finished, then polished before mounting the stone into place.

In this case it is a boyfriend ringCwings designed around a large blue topaz stone cut into a pear shape.

The drawing
For this project, our client knew exactly what she wanted, so we started with the sketch she provided.

Our client is not a professional in the jewelry industry and since jewelry design is a practice that requires a lot of practice, we designed her ring project with our CAD tools.
And this was to present her with a visual rendering faithful to what she could hope to expect once the ring was made.
Here is the rendering of this modeling.

Production
Once the design has been validated and frozen by our client, we can begin production of the 18k yellow gold ring using the lost wax casting process, following the same steps as the production of the ring presented previously.

Note the rough appearance of the gold and the claws that will be used to set the stones
After this step, the finishing phase begins with cutting the feed channels of our ring and polishing the gold.
Then comes the setting of the stones in their respective positions.
