Whether it is for yourself or to give a ring to a loved one, it is always delicate choose the right ring size.
Choose a ring that’s too big for your wife and she’ll risk losing it before she can get it fitted to the right size by her jeweler, and if it’s too small she’ll be frustrated at not being able to get it on her finger.
And if you give your man a ring, sir, and it’s too small, it risks getting stuck on his finger. No, it doesn’t just happen to children, believe me 😉 .
To remove a ring that is too small, this online tutorial will help you.
So, instead of choosing randomly, discover below the several simple methods that allow you to do so know your ring size before making your purchase or having your ring made.

These techniques will help you in particular to know the size of a women’s or men’s signet ring in gold or silver without having a ring sizer and without the person suspecting anything, which, in the case of a surprise gift, is imperative.

1. How is the size of a ring defined?
In France, the ring size is the value of the internal circumference of your ring, expressed in millimetres.
This is also the size value of your finger.
- So, if your wife’s finger size is 52 (5.2 centimeters), her ring size is 52
- Likewise, if your partner’s finger size is 60 (6 centimeters), his ring size will be 60
- Some people who wear pinky rings can have ring sizes up to 40
To convert these French ring sizes to US sizes, see our conversion chart below.

2. Measure your size directly on a ring
There are many more or less precise methods to help you determine the ideal ring size for your finger.
Here we offer you a quick, simple and reliable method to measure your ring size or that of your partner.
Valid for both men and women, this method will save you from having to go to your jeweler.
You will only need the graduated ring, some paper, a pen and a ruler.

Little equipment needed to measure your ring size.
The simple method is summarized in this one-minute video.

3. Some explanations about finger size measurement
The value measured with this method is equal to the circumference of the ring, which corresponds exactly to the size of the CEE ring used in jewelry.
So if you measure a value of 52 millimeters for the circumference of the ring, your ring size will be 52.
If the measured value is between 52 and 53 millimeters, you will need to choose ring size 53, which is the largest integer value.
Keep in mind that to know the inside diameter of your ring (which is slightly larger than the diameter of your finger), you need to divide the measured value by Pi = 3.141.
52 / 3.141 = 16.55mm
Measurement Tips:
To measure your spouse’s ring size, take a ring that he or she wears regularly. Over time, the size of your finger may vary and old rings may no longer fit the size of your finger.
Why not measure the diameter of the ring with a ruler?
Since the size of the ring is the circumference of its internal diameter, it is obtained by multiplying the diameter by Pi = 3.14.
So a measurement error of half a millimeter on the diameter of the ring will result in an error of 1.5 mm on the circumference of the ring, i.e. one and a half sizes above or below the actual ring size.

4. Find out your size by measuring the circumference of your finger
If you don’t have a ring to measure the ring size of the person your ring project is for, you can still measure the finger size using a string.
This is not discreet but remains the simplest and cheapest method.
You will need some string, preferably quite thin, a pen and a ruler.

This video shows how to proceed to carry out this measurement:
As you can see, you need to fold the cord in half to reduce the measurement error as explained above.

5. Find out your size using a ring sizer
The ring sizer is another solution for knowing your ring size.
This solution seems the least practical to me, given that you will first have to print the ring sizer and pay close attention to the print scale.
Otherwise your measurements will be inaccurate and you risk making a mistake when choosing your ring size.
- Search for a ring sizer in Google Image with the term ring sizer
- Print the ring sizer paying attention to the print scale of the ring sizer
- Overlap the measuring ring over the circles of the ring sizer
- Once the inside of the ring matches exactly with one of the circles on the ring sizer, it is the latter that tells you the size of said ring

6. Size measurement carried out by a jeweler
To easily measure ring sizes, jewelers use triboulets, like the ones shown below.

Triboulets, one normal and the other for large sizes, used by jewelers to measure ring sizes
We are talking about a large ring size starting from a size 70, therefore a special triboulet is necessary to be able to take the measurement.
Jewelers also use ring sizers to directly measure the size of the finger.

7. Ring Size Guide
This table shows the correspondence between the internal diameter of your ring and the ring size for sizes ranging from 41 to 70.
But remember that measuring your ring size from the ring diameter is the best way to make a measurement error as explained above in the Measurement Method chapter.
