The eagle is a mythological animal, used since Egyptian times to symbolize the power of the gods or mysticism.
Taken by the Romans or Byzantines to symbolize the power of their respective empires, it is found on numerous cut or shaped period jewels.
The eagle, like the image of the lion, is also used in heraldry for the creation of family coats of arms and seals. Here you will discover a detailed explanation of the symbolism of the heraldic eagle.
The signet ring presented here is custom made in 18k yellow gold, based on our customer’s design.

Design, from paper to virtual
For this project we started from the design of our client’s coat of arms to create a 3D model of their eagle design on the signet ring tray.

Eagle design that served as the model for our ring
Reducing the size means we lose the detail of the drawing. To give you an idea, the letters of the text will ultimately be only one millimeter high.
We also retouched the ends of the banner where the text is written in order to simplify the design which, once engraved in relief, was barely visible.
We thus obtain a virtual draft that allows us to have a good idea of the final result of our project.

After this first phase, which summarizes the customer’s needs and what we can do, the project is set in stone to be created in the laboratory.
Production
Production is divided into two phases:
- First, a wax master is made by 3D printing from the digital file previously produced by the computer
- secondly, the making of the gold ring from the waxed master obtained through 3D printing
Being a wax master
First we print a wax model of the future ring which will then be used to make the mold into which we will pour the gold. Here we can see sketches of the signet ring tray and see the relief engraving rendering of the design.

3D printing test of the relief engraving of the design
It can be noted that the engraved text remains legible despite the smallness of the letters. The trickiest part of this step is making the ring tray’s embossed moldings correctly so that no detail of the eagle or even the legend is missing.
In fact, any flaw of the wax master will be found on the gold ring.
Gold production via smelting process
We then move on to the actual processing, we use our master to create a plaster mold into which our molten gold is poured.
This manufacturing process called lost wax casting is summarized in this video:
This process allows us to obtain our ring in raw gold, which once deburred, filed and polished gives us this final result:
